Between class, homework, cleaning my apartment and extracurriculars, i am really straining to find any leisure time. What is there to do, how does one make time for friends, how does one blow off steam or find time to relax? ... a statement comes to mind that i saw on a bulletin board in wheeler hall freshmen year, "can't sleep, CAL will eat me"... a statement that is especially true around right about now, it being midterm and paper time and me being an English major with more reading than i know what to do with. What does everyone else do to get out and relax, hang out, have some fun or spare some time with friends, or make new ones? Could really use some ideas... keeping time management in mind...

Sun, November 18, 2007 - 9:36 AMsure, but everyone needs a mental break from doing schoolwork. I'd say give yourself breaks, but time them so they are short and don't suck all your time away.

Re: finding time for stuff other than school
Sun, November 18, 2007 - 10:52 AMi run to maintain my sanity. it's become an addiction.
also, i've come to realize that studying over time has diminishing marginal returns (sorry! econ major!)
sometimes it gets to the point where an extra hour studying will not bring that big of a payoff
also, being a math-econ major (don't know if others of you relate), i've come to realize that a lot of my thinking is done when i'm not studying
i take long walks, long runs, spend significant time in the kitchen, tanning on my rooftop (when weather permits), surfing the net
this gives the math/econ ideas time to marinate in my head and makes hitting the books much easier. whereas if i bury my head in books all the time, it's just a hell of a lot more frustration.
for me, i've spent the last year coming to terms with the fact that i'm not a busy-body or a type-a personality. and that's okay. and i can still be successful, just at my own pace and on my own schedule (also why i realized triathlon-ing is not for me). i now use my time and manage my anxieties accordingly :)
don't know if that helps... but that's just how i roll :)

Re: finding time for stuff other than school
Sun, November 18, 2007 - 4:48 PMLook at it this way - you make time to eat, shower, do laundry, go the gym, etc. so you need to just make time for relaxing, hanging out, etc. even if it's a small amount of time. I used to always give myself 15-30 minutes to read before bed. Not read for school either! Trashy magazines, old books that I loved, etc. It's important to set aside a little bit of time for stuff that you want to do, whether it's meeting someone for coffee or taking a hike.
Look at it this way - an hour here or there is NOT going to cause your entire academic existence to come crashing down (and if an hour IS going to do that, you really need better time management skills anyway) so give yourself little pockets of time to watch tv, goof off, or just sit on the sofa and stare at the ceiling. You might not look at those as essential activities, but you'll lose your mind if all you do is go from one thing to another. Let the Type A shit go and learn to create free time for yourself so that you can enjoy your college experience.
And I say this as someone who isn't in school anymore - you should really appreciate the unique circumstance of being a college student while you can. In a few years, it won't be cool to show up at someone's door unannounced at 2am to say, "Hey, let's go get some tacos!"
