Getting in to grad programs

Hi!

I'm new to the tribe -- I live near Washington, DC and am planning on applying to graduate programs this year (to start school in fall 08). I graduated from college this January and am really hoping to get into the UC Berkeley Rhetoric program -- you know, the one that's super hard to get into. :) I am especially interested because the subject I am hoping to write my thesis on draws on the work of Judith Butler, and it would just make my whole life to get to work with the actual Judith Butler.

My transcripts are ok, my GREs are good, but I feel like I should be doing stuff this year to impress the admissions people. Right now, I am doing web development to pay the bills, taking tons of dance classes, and starting to look for opportunities to get some of my writing published. I am contemplating the idea of getting some kind of internship for a feminist-type advocacy group.

Are there any rhetoric students or friends of rhetoric students here? What do you think they're looking for most?

I would say mostly to have a strong personal statement that says exactly what specific field of rhetoric you plan on studying for the rest of your natural life on this planet. I personally wouldn't say that your main ambition is to work with Judith Butler, only because EVERYBODY wants to work with her, and because she's a slight recluse as a result. I only saw her once at an English function, and I thought, "Holy shit, is that really her?"

2 years here, and I've had one spotting.

Sorry to sound slightly cynical. I do wish you the best of luck.
